The quinquennalia of three Caesars
Lot 5336
Licinius II, Caesar, 317-324. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 3.00 g, 6 h), Siscia, 320. LICINIVS IVN NOB CAES Laureate head of Licinius II to right. Rev. CAESARVM NOSTRORVM around VOT/I•S / •V• in three lines; in exergue, •ΔSIS•. RIC 143. Rare. Somewhat smoothed, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The vota on this coin is for the quinquennalia of the three Caesars at the time, inluding Licinius II. Formally, the quinquennial year would fall on 1 March 321 to 1 March 322. In the early fourth century, however, it was commonplace to strike coins with different vota formulae long before the actual celebrations. It is often unclear if the vota is taken ('suscepta'), or fulfilled ('soluta'), complicating the dating of these coins.
